What is the client's business? The client's organisation is a provider of temporary workforce at Schiphol airport. Most people will associate an airport with passenger travel, but in this case there is an enormous need for people working in the cargo industry. In a labour market as today in The Netherlands (shortage of all workforce) it is important to train people for an specific business before sending them out to a client. The sort of organisations like our client must therefore put more effort in training and education before they are able to get substantial business. |
What was the clients question? Can you help us to make a training format that is less formal and more up to the needs of the people we want to send to our clients. We did follow ourselves the training that is normally done and found them too theoretical for our target group. These are all people that are not in the habit of training or following class. Can you make it more interesting and more interactive. We need them to learn 60% of the daily work and most of the routine, but we also want to get a clear view on their skills. |
How did we answer the brief? Together with people out of the cargo business we defined what is essential for people to know before being able to enter this line of work. We did some internships and worked a few night shifts. Then we sat back and designed out simulation following most of what we have seen in our practical work. Now we use small (play) cargo to ship all over the world and divide the group in the cargo agent, airline and handling agent. In the simulation the youngsters now learn the trade by doing. After this programme we made several others specialised on aspects of the business. With colleagues we now master simulations on the basics of the business but also on crisis and disaster management. |
What is the result? In the last two years we ran this simulation once or twice a month. The students are very well received by industry. Most of them have a relevant job within several weeks and stay in the business. At the moment we are still developing modules for clients and specific parts of the cargo industry. These simulations have been run in English, French and Dutch, but even German is possible. Naar een diapresentatie over dit project |
